The day passed in a blur as I sat in Levanna’s spell room. I switched between looking over the mountains in a daze and trying to read more of Nyna’s journal.

But my mind kept returning to the pain that was embedded in me long ago. Loss was something I was never good at. And even though she was still here, I was beginning to doubt she would ever come back from this. Why would she? I didn’t care if she fixed this realm or burned it. I just wanted her to feel loved, protected, and know that she wasn’t alone…

Scanning through a few more pages of the journal, my eyes caught on a spell with the stone on it. Something about it felt like it was for me. It wasn’t the Ember stone; it was the Fallen one. Looking over the small text lining the side of the page, I noticed a phrase my father used to say.

‘Val tes brutalia, Le vas et viau.’ Even in death, I am with you. But it was what was after the phrase that made my heart speed up: Come see me. We need to talk.

Looking up, I felt my eyes widen as Levanna turned. “Look what I found,” I said as I moved in and placed the journal in her hands.

She read it over several times, before looking at me with shock. “Kadeyan, this spell allows you to see your father.” She shook her head, almost laughing.

“Can you do it?” I asked, impatience taking over.

I could see him…

“Yeah, I don’t see why not. This spell was made for someone like me… Well…”

“What?” I asked as my heartbeat quickened.

“It was like it was made for me. The dialogue is exactly how I speak in spells. How did Nyna—”

Pulling the stone to me, it appeared in my hand, and I placed it down on the journal. “Please…send me in there.”

About ten minutes passed while Levanna set up a circle of black salt, imbued with my blood, before handing me the onyx stone. “I don’t know what you are going to feel when I send you in. It could be nothing, or…painful.”

I laughed. “I don’t care.” The tears built in my eyes, and I blinked them away. There was no need for them, not when I was getting something I longed for and never thought was possible. To see the man who raised me and molded me into who I became, even just one more time…it was everything in this moment.

That ceremony that the Sky Court would perform, Saawyn, gave me so much hope. Everyone in attendance would cut their palms with dark obsidian, letting their blood fall into a bowl. Then, an elder of the Acolytes would cast the enchantment needed to pull the dead to us. A sheer dome would appear in the clearing in the woods of the Fallen Lands, and if you had a connection with someone in the afterlife…there was a chance they would come to you.

He never came, but now…

“When you are ready, Lev,” I said.
